RED LAKE HORIZONS VISITS WHITE EARTH LAND RECOVERY PROJECT
We took our first trip to White Earth Reservation to tour Winona Laduke’s Strawberry Farm, Native Harvest Store, and Pine Point Charter School. All are ecologically sustaining their projects by buying and selling all the local artists work. They also buy all the local organic food that is gathered seasonally from the surrounding families and communities.
We were really impressed about how they got to make positive healthy changes in starting their own charter school. Even though the state would not allow any changes because of state money and state policies.
The tour was so inspiring for all who went along. We plan on impementing the same changes in our communities and have plans to begin right away with organic gardens. White Earth Public school had 72% native children. We learned that they coordinated with all the families and staged a school walk out.
They were left with a empty building that the state had to evenually give back to the community. Now they have total control over what their children eat and learn. Truancy is not a problem http://nativeharvest.com/
